"Haiku bridges for people-to-people communication "
The purpose of activities
Through haiku, "the shortest poetry in the world", we would like to strengthen both virtual and real communication between Japan and countries abroad via Osaka, the birthplace of Edo-period haiku poet Yosa Buson. From Osaka, we would like to promote a close relationship with foreign haiku lovers, "Buson Haiku International Awards" as its opportunity.
Goals for our international cultural exchange
・ Reevaluate the haiku poet Yosa Buson and spread the tradition of haiku culture around the world
・ Communicate with haiku lovers in Asia and the West, including students in colleges and schools
・ Promote Kema, an area of Osaka, as the birthplace of Buson
・ Realize hearty communication through haiku with people around the world
About "the hearty communication with the West countries and Taiwan"
We have prepared an "International Exchanging Section" page within our Buson's 300th Anniversary website. Here we invite every haiku lovers to contribute their haiku. We also share those haiku and some essays written on haiku's profoundness here.
For the 300th anniversary of Buson's birth, we hosted an international haiku contest and awarded "Buson Haiku International Awards" (which consists of Governor's Award, Mayor's Award and Haiku Academy's President's Award). The Awards, carefully selected, were awarded to the excellent works among the entries from abroad.
The planned memorial events
・ Symposiums on haiku culture (which shall be given with haiku scholars, prominent haiku poets, or haiku critics)
・ Haiku meetings (namely, composing and singing haiku) on Yakatabune (a Japanese houseboat), which travels the Yodo River from certain place near Buson's birthplace
・ Buson Walk (starts from certain place where Buson's haiku were written, and goes through the Buson Park, the Kema Lock, and Buson's birthplace)
・ Building Buson's statue in the Buson Park (donation to Osaka City)
・ Planting commemorative trees (which species were composed within Buson's haiku) in Buson Park (donation to Osaka City)
・ Buson memorial haiku competition (which accept haiku from home and abroad. Excellent works will be awarded)
・ "Picture-Story Show of Buson" and "commemorative live concert for Buson"
We hope our projects and activities will be warmly accepted and supported by all haiku lovers around the world, in schools or colleges. We are looking forward for the friendship that will promote "international friendship wih haiku".
It will be a wonderful opportunity to build a hearty friendship among different countries through "haiku". We are sincerely expecting your visit to our commemorative "Buson Park" some day.
